Mechanical Engineering Overview

Features of the program include:

A broad exposure to every engineering discipline before specialization;

Specialized training within one of five areas of mechanical engineering;

Practical experience through design projects and opportunities to work with faculty in research;

Opportunities to combine a rigorous engineering program with Brown's strength in the Liberal Arts and Humanities.

Brown offers a unique four year undergraduate program leading to an ScB degree. Our program is designed: to give students a broad exposure to all areas of engineering; to develop a deep understanding of mechanical engineering science; and to foster student's creativity and professional skills through design and project work. We maintain leading research programs in the Mechanics of Solids and Structures; Fluid Mechanics; Thermal Sciences and Biomechanics. Brown is host to a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, one of thirteen such centers nationwide. The Center offers both summer and academic year internships to undergraduate students every year.

The faculty is comprised of both academic researchers and practicing professional engineers. Two of our mechanical engineering faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering, one is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, and one is also a member of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. By tradition even the most senior faculty teach and advise under-graduate students.

Our students, while drawn from diverse backgrounds, are all exceptionally able and committed to learning. We encourage collaboration and teamwork throughout our curriculum. Brown Mechanical Engineering graduates enter positions at leading manufacturing companies; financial and management consultancies; as well as top graduate schools.
