Civil Engineering Overview

Civil Engineering is the engineering of construction. The decisions that civil engineers make affect us everyday, from the roads we drive on, to the buildings we live and work in, to the water we drink and the electricity we consume.

Brown offers a unique four year undergraduate program leading to an ScB degree. Our program is designed to give students a broad exposure to all areas of engineering; to develop a sound understanding of the science that underlies civil engineering; and to foster student's creativity and professional skills through design and project work.

Brown's civil engineering program offers students the opportunity to choose one of two tracks: Structures or Environmental Problems and Planning. Students in the Structures track focus on the analysis and design of structures, including the soil mechanics background required for the design of foundations. Students in the Environmental Problems and Planning track focus on fluid mechanics and the chemical and geological issues of environmental engineering. Both programs are ABET accredited and face regular reevaluation, keeping our graduates up to speed with the rapidly changing landscape of engineering.

Our approach

The small size of Brown's engineering program allows its most distinguished faculty to instruct undergraduates and graduates at every level. The upper level civil engineering courses are taught by regular faculty members who have received numerous awards for their research - two have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering - and by professional engineers who are highly regarded for their contributions to engineering practice in their respective areas of specialization.
