Career Choices in Computer Engineering
What Will I Do as a Computer Engineer?
Employment opportunities for computer engineers (as well as electrical engineers and computer scientists) are tremendous. More often than not electrical engineers will deal with the physical aspects of products (for example, chip designs, circuits, control systems etc.) and computer scientists will be involved with software design (databases, operating systems, computational complexity etc.).
Computer engineers are trained to handle a spectrum of tasks covering both areas. This balance of skills is attractive to potential employers and allows the student to continue studying in graduate or professional school in many areas.
After completing an undergraduate degree in the computer engineering area at Brown, students are well prepared to pursue many different opportunities in the real world. While a number continue on in graduate schools, some join well-known corporations, some turn to the business world, and some even start their own companies. Many students benefit greatly from internship opportunities that are available during their years in the computer engineering program at Brown.
