Research: Engineered Surfaces: Rough Surface Contact

Summary

The goal of this project is to predict the evolution of surface roughness, plastic flow, wear and fatigue during normal indentation or rolling and sliding contact between two surfaces.  There are two current projects:

1. Experimental studies of roughness evolution during indentation sliding, using as-received and patterned surfaces (J. Wang, K.S. Kim)

2. Continuum and discrete dislocation simulations of inelastic contact between surfaces with fractal surface roughness (Yanfei Gao, Allan Bower, Leo Lev, Y.T. Cheng, Alan Needleman, Vikram Deshpande, Eric Van der Giessen. )
