Research: Engineered Surfaces: Constitutive laws for sliding friction

Summary

The goal of this project is to develop robust constitutive laws to model friction between two sliding surfaces for use in finite element simulations.  The models are being used to study the stability of sliding under dynamic loading.  There are two current projects

1. Continuum modeling of dynamic sliding friction between contacting surfaces (Demir Coker, Alan Needleman)

2. Discrete dislocation simulations of size effects on frictional behavior of sliding asperities (Vikram Deshpande, Eric Van der Giessen, Alan Needleman)
