There is a typo on problem 1g of Homework #5: The problem should read:

"Calculate the minimum weight Ww (not Wc) which will ensure that the wave speed c is greater than the top speed of the Acela, 150 mph."

in other words, find the counterweight needed to make sure the wavespeed of the cable is large enough. (the cable weight Wc is set by the span)
You will need the EXCEL solver feature for this and future work. See the computer help page if you need help with it.

Here is a description of the  Maple truss analysis program. To download the program itself, right click here. You should use "save target as..." to save the file as Truss.mws. For your first run, try the tutorial input file. (Right click to save this as tutorial.inp.txt.)
