This page contains links to licensed software at the Division of Engineering at Brown University. All software packages are provided and licensed solely for class use only. Some of the licenses are limited to a certain number of simultaneous users and a license may not be available to you at any given time. Follow these guidelines to make use of any of the software below:

  1. Activate your Division of Engineering user account
    • You will have a user account if you are a student registered in any engineering courses. You need to log on at least once to the computer clusters in the Instructional Facility (B&H 191) to activate your account.
    • The logon name is generated from the first six characters of the student's last name appended by the first and second initial, removing spaces and quotes. For example, for student Christopher T. McDowell, the username would be mcdowect. The initial password is your Banner ID prefixed with the first letter of your last name and with a lower case 'b'. For example, for our student Christopher T. McDowell with Banner ID B123456, the initial password would be Mb123456.
    • Contact help@engin.brown.edu if you don't know your username or password.
  2. Configure your computer to use NTLMv2 authentication
    • If your password are not accepted when you are trying to download the software you probably need to configure your computer to use NTLMv2 authentication. Click here for instructions.
  3. Obtaining a License
    • In order for this software to obtain a license you must be connected to the Division of Engineering's local network. You may connect to our VPN if you are outside of our local network.
      • How do I know if my computer is on the Division of Engineering's local network? Start a Command Prompt, type "PING EN-CLASS", and press Enter. If you get "request timed out" or "destination unreachable" then your computer is probably not on our local network.
      • If you are sure that you are on our local network, but cannot ping our license server, you may need to add "engin.brown.edu" to the DNS suffixes list on your computer.
        • Open the Control Panel >> Network Connections >> Local Area Connection
        • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) >> Properties >> Advanced >> DNS
        • Check Append these DNS Suffixes (in order) >> Click Add >> engin.brown.edu >>Click Add
        • Click OK three times to save these settings
      • If you need to connect to our local network via VPN, follow these steps.
        • Download the installation file.
        • Click Extract to begin.
        • Click OK when extraction finishes and the installation will start automatically.
        • Click Yes to begin.
        • Install for All Users and optionally create a shortcut.
        • Click OK to install.
        • Click Cancel when prompted for area code.
        • Open the Engineering VPN connection.
        • Click General.
        • Select I am already connected to the internet.
        • Click OK.
          • If you are using dial-up internet you will need to connect to the internet first before you make the VPN connection.
        • Enter your username, password, and "ENGINEERING" for the logon domain.
        • Click Connect.
  4. Download the desired software
    • The sizes of the installation files of these software are usually quite large, so make sure that you have enough disk space to download and extract them (and of course to install them)
    • Contact help@engin.brown.edu if you have problem downloading them
  5. Install the software by following the instructions provided. Please note that instructions provided here are for typical installations. You may perform custom installations if needed.
  6. Keep VPN Connection running while you are running the software if your computer is not on the Division of Egineering's local network
    • Most of these software will continuously check for software licenses, so you will need to keep your VPN connection connected while you are running them. Data transmitted via the VPN are encrypted with 128-bit encryption.
  7. Be aware of the time restrictions for licenses usages: All licenses are not available to any user that is not on the Division of Engineering's local network between 7:00AM and 5:00PM, Monday to Friday when classes are in session
