What Kind of Person Makes a Good Engineer?
Engineers work in a variety of business environments, and solve all sorts of complex problems everyday. So what kind of a person makes a good engineer? They must be creative, and have good problem solving skills. They must have a good understanding of mathematics and science, computers, and developing technology. Since almost all engineering projects are done by teams, they need good communication skills and leadership qualities. They must be aware of the environmental impact of their work, as well as the needs and desires of the public. Finally, engineers need a good understanding of business practices, finance, and management.
Brown's program provides students an opportunity to address all of these issues. Undergraduates receive a broad education in not just one but all of the major fields of modern-day engineering - before specializing in their junior year. Throughout their study, they participate in laboratories that emphasize both the physical understanding of modern technology, and the need to communicate with team members. A good engineer is always learning. Brown's engineering program aims to give you the skills to begin this lifelong process.
